🚨 Who Will Save Our Children's Hearts? South Korea's Pediatric Heart Surgery Crisis

Could the day come when South Korean children must travel overseas just to receive life-saving heart surgery?

South Korea is known around the world for its advanced medical technology.

Yet behind this reputation lies a troubling reality.

The country is facing a serious shortage of pediatric cardiac surgeons — specialists who perform complex, life-saving operations on babies and children born with heart defects.

According to figures presented at a National Assembly policy forum in January 2026, South Korea had only 27 active pediatric cardiac surgeons, including six aged 60 or older.

Why is a country with world-class medical technology struggling to maintain such an essential medical service?

One major concern is the financial structure of the healthcare system.

Pediatric heart surgery requires extraordinary skill, years of specialized training, intensive medical resources, and enormous responsibility.

However, medical professionals have raised concerns that reimbursement rates under the national health insurance system do not adequately cover the costs of providing this highly specialized care.

Hospitals face financial losses.

Doctors face overwhelming workloads and professional risks.

And fewer young physicians may choose to enter this demanding field.

Meanwhile, international patients may pay substantially higher fees for certain medical procedures.

This raises an uncomfortable question:

Why should hospitals struggle financially when performing life-saving surgery for children in their own country?

The issue is not about blaming international patients.

It is about building a healthcare system that properly values essential medical services.

South Korea's government continues to express concern about the country's declining birth rate.

But what is the point of encouraging families to have more children if the healthcare system cannot guarantee access to life-saving treatment when those children become seriously ill?

Today, many families already have to travel outside their home regions to obtain specialized pediatric heart surgery.

If the shortage of specialists continues, could some families eventually be forced to seek treatment abroad?

That possibility should concern every parent and every policymaker.

A child's chance of survival must never depend on whether a medical procedure is financially profitable.

South Korea urgently needs:

✅ Fair reimbursement for pediatric cardiac surgery
✅ Sustainable financial support for essential medical services
✅ Better training and recruitment of young cardiac surgeons
✅ Stronger regional pediatric healthcare systems
✅ Improved working conditions and professional support for medical teams

A nation cannot call itself truly advanced if it fails to protect its most vulnerable children.

Children's lives should never be treated as a financial burden.

Healthcare is not merely a business.

It is a fundamental responsibility of society.

❤️ No child should have to cross an ocean to receive the heart surgery they need to survive.

What do you think?

Should the South Korean government take greater responsibility for protecting essential pediatric healthcare?
